The woodcock is a small bird that extensively inhabits Belarus. It lives in forests with deciduous and mixed vegetation. He leads a secretive lifestyle, loves impassable areas of the massif. Among hunters, this is one of their most favorite bird species for spring and autumn hunting. Terms of woodcock hunting in Belarus

The calendar is divided into two periods: spring and autumn. In the first case, this is the interval from March 20 to May 9. The autumn period begins at the end of summer (August 14) and ends with the onset of winter (December 12). The most common ways of hunting woodcock, used in autumn and spring, include the following:

  • from the approach (entrance);
  • from an ambush (on traction);
  • with a lure.

Please note: from the approach (from the entrance) it is allowed to hunt only in autumn. The rest of these methods are applicable to both periods. A smooth-bore hunting rifle is used. Hunting dogs of the following breeds can be used for searching and carrying prey: dachshunds, retrievers, terriers, spaniels (except greyhounds and hounds).

Useful information for the hunter

Woodcock lives not only in woodlands, but also in alternating swampy areas with small shrubs. You can distinguish a bird by its characteristic straight beak (up to 10 cm in length). Its dimensions are relatively small – about 35-40 cm; the average weight is 400 g. Woodcock hunting in Belarus is widespread almost everywhere due to the wide distribution of the species. The color color of the operculum is closer to the red-brown variant. It helps to hide in autumn against the background of fallen leaves. Woodcock feeds mainly on earthworms.
